Dynamite Stick appetizer, think they also call them fire sticks, very delicious. Free bread loaves with olive oil and garlic to dip in, while you wait, delicious. I always get the skillitini as my entree, it comes in a skillet still sizzlinh with your choice of meat or meats. When your choice is great and amazing everytime you eat here, why change it!

We went for an early dinner ~5:20 and got right in on a Saturday night which was great. They sat us at a table, which is tough for a family of four considering the tables were quite small. Then I noticed that all the big spacious booths were filling up with couples, that was disappointing but oh well. Proceeded to order and wait and wait and wait 55 minutes later the server brought our kids food and nearly ten minutes later the kitchen staff brought my wife and my dinners and severely warned us the plates would be really really hot as if to indicate they were so annoyed that they were left to sit under the heating lamp for so long. I could tell they were not happy with the server, which was impressive as they actually care about food quality. Food was decent, we ordered a dessert to go and left. Server was not bad but you could tell she had too many tables..... Basically management fail. Haven't eaten there in years and probably won't for another few.

We have eaten here in the past and never had any issues. Typical heavy Italian food that had great taste and good service. This Johnny's is on par with Carraba's. We ordered the appetizer family sized Italian Nachos w/sausage but the sausage was lacking for the money spent. 3 meat pasta, spaghetti, lobster ravioli, chicken Marsala were good. Service was solid, our drinks/needs were met. Only drawback was the appetizer. Value for price paid was average. I would recommend this to others.

Was told to stop here while in town. Excellent service, my waitress was very friendly and made some great suggestions! Portions are huge, so now i have lunch for tomorrow or a midnight snack! I had the spaghetti with meatballs, amazing! The sauce and the homemade meatballs were delicious! Then to finish, i ordered the turtle cheesecake, all i can say is yum! Overall wonderful experience!

Food was good they forgot the oil for our bread, upset the wife but otherwise it was great. I will eat here again for sure! Wife loves the chicken with angel hair pasta. I liked the home style meatballs noodles were a little over done.

I had not been back to Johnny Carino's for 5 years.....and quite honestly....it was not what I remember. Besides the 30 minute wait to be seated (self inflicted as we went during the diner hour)....the food just really seemed to miss the mark on all accounts. I ordered the Chicken Penne .....it arrived cold, the sauce was runny/watery and there was only two small pieces of chicken in the whole dish. My wife's seafood dish was cold and there was but a scant couple of small shrimp in the dish. The bread they are so famous for was ok...but nothing out of the ordinary....if even a little doughy inside. Kind of makes you wonder what is going on back in the kitchen? And if there is any type of quality control? Don't think we will be back.

We have been loyal patrons of Johnny Carino's for several years. We have never been let down, so I felt it was time for a review on Yelp! We often stop by for dessert and a drink. The hostesses are friendly and allow us to go directly to the bar. Several of the bartenders know us by name. They are pouring our drinks as we sit down. We are big fans of their Sangria. (I know.. it is not traditional to have brandy in Sangria - but their spin on it is delicious.) Most restaurants have downsized their desserts. I am routinely disappointed with other higher quality restaurants in Sioux Falls. A slice of cheesecake seems to get skinnier all the time. Carino's has kept their generous portions. The turtle cheesecake is delicious. Personally, my favorite is the Italian chocolate cake. You get two generous pieces, along with a scoop of ice cream. It's the perfect size to share, if you can't handle it on your own. The frosting is creamy and perfect for a chocoholic, like myself. I must also give high praise to the Pecan Crusted Salmon Salad. The lettuce has always been crisp and never drowning in the dressing. Plenty of pecans make this salad delicious. All in all, we enjoy Johnny Carino's. Others may avoid chain restaurants, but we find the service and food to be consistently top-knotch.

Mid week lunch specials are of excellent value. Ordered the Seven layer lasagna for under $9. The environment is very relaxing and clean. Our server was prompt and made it a point to stop by more than once to make sure we had everything we wanted. We ended our yummy experience with a mini dessert. Was the right size after consuming a fantastic meal. Looking forward to a return trip along with a sampling of wine next time!

We ate here a while ago. A server blew her nose right out in the dining room, tossed the tissue, didn't wash her hands and reached in the bread case to put bread in a bag. If we weren't already finished eating we would have left.

  • Candy H.

Food was OK -- it's a chain. I had an issue with the host. We got seated in the bar instead of the dining room. I'm OK with that if someone asks me, but they just plopped us down there. I would rather wait for a table in the dining room, but I didn't get the choice. I talked to the manager about this, and he said that they try to spread the tips around to the bar staff too, so that's why they do it. Not my problem. I wanted to have a quiet dinner -- not eat in a dirty bar with 7 TVs blaring. They just don't get customer service at this location.

Very disappointed. Service was slow the waitress appeared to not happy or wAnting to be a work which translated into slow service. The hot bread was the best part of the meal. Pastas were so bland that it tasted like we were at a hospital cafeteria. I would have had better pasta sauce from a jar. I will not be back.

This is a very busy restaurant. We sat in the bar area. The hot bread was delicious served right away. We had a few mishaps with our meal- a dirty glass and cold food. They were corrected but it wasn't a great experience.

Ordered takeout tonight & was very disappointed!! I ordered the Spicy Chicken Ramano, very bland, not sure why it's called spicy, because I couldn't taste any spices in this dish. I will take Carino's off my list!!! And, I called in to order, waited @ least 10 minutes on hold to order, I finally hung up & called back. I guess that should've told me something. Probably won't be back!!!

This is the MOST disgusting food I have EVER had, and I've travelled all over the world. The nachos were obviously reheated and the toppings were dry and crusted. The panini we ordered was greasy, much too salty, and the chips that came with it were undercooked and oily. The only good thing about this restaurant is the garlic bread, which they give you two pieces of. To add insult to injury, the waitress barely paid attention to us, and didn't even stop by to ask how everything was. Do NOT waste your money or time at this disgusting, pathetic excuse for an Italian restaurant.

They have food and service down to a science here. The children love the bread and olive oil and garlic chunks. It's good solid fresh food, pasta is perfect and service is even better. I have had the Veal parmigiana 7 times in a row. The last time it was a bit burnt and the manager took off $7.00 didn't understand that. It wasn't necessary as I told him. Consistently good.

One and a half stars, I guess...meh. Cute red checked tablecloths clashed with the fake grapevines and dark color scheme. Pick one style of italian, please? Either italian hearty homestyle cooking decor or wannabe upscale italian with the faux vines and grape marbles. Kinda cheesy overall as far as atmosphere. The GOOD: Bread service is done in the "homestyle" manner, in a way I have not yet observed. A nice sized baguette is warmed and tucked into white paper, served with olive oil and garlic nibbles (freeze-dried?). HOwever they make those little garlic things, they are tasty in the oil, with the bread. One and a half stars for the bread. And, I suppose, the wine list. It was decent. The BAD: Tables are tightly crowded together in front of a nice, open style kitchen. I liked that aspect, and it made me excited to see what would appear on our plates. I was sorely disappointed. I ordered the seafood fettucine, marinara sauce, with a little side of alfredo, because I wanted to try both sauces. The marinara was just okay. I've had better store-bought. The alfredo was a gooey white disaster. Tasteless, even. I tried it twice to make sure I was not mistaken. The experience was reminiscent of having a sinus infection and trying to taste your food. Ick. The seafood: mixed results. The shrimp and mussels were not overcooked, as I feared by that point. They were fine, prepared properly. The strange circular things they were trying to pass off as calamari, however, had a strange chewy texture not unlike a piece of licorice. Double ick. Overall, I would not recommend this place, not worth spending your money, unless you are looking to purchase an underwhelming experience.

Above average, Sioux Falls Italian food, what can you say. If you're wife is upset about not getting oil for her bread she is a pig.

It was attached to the hotel, and we had done a long drive and couldn't be bothered to find a good restaurant downtown that would be open on a Sunday evening. Plus, it had the promise of booze. We opted for the bar and the hostess offered a high top table, which was nice. The stools were a little slippery and will push you forward if you slouch even just a little bit. There was a pastiche of black and white celebrity photos on a wall with various Italians, real and fictional (e.g., De Niro, Rocky Balboa), and honorary Italians. That, and the rest of the decor felt contrived. They had some drink specials which the server explained with care. There is a decent tap selection. We ordered an Old Fashioned which was made solidly. They start you with soft long bread roll in a white paper bag, which you can share and tear apart to dip into a plate of oil and tiny, crunchy garlic pieces. The garlic-- however it is fabricated--makes the dish. The servers provide freshly grated American parmesan for entrees, but the pepper is pre-ground in a shaker. The spaghetti with meatballs has 3 large meatballs which have a soft texture and moistness but lean a tad too much toward the breadcrumb side for me. The red sauce is flavorless and only leads toward apathy at the dish. Yes, Johnny Carino's "zesty sauce" is a form of pathos. I was disappointed that the timballo is not a timballo. It is, however, chopped spaghetti mixed with sausage, olives, mushrooms, and onions and the same bland red sauce, with a smattering of shredded cheese (cheddar on Italian?) on top, and thrown under a heat lamp. The flavor of the various ingredients was its saving grace (when you happened to chance upon one), but it still fell flat. The server fulfilled our request for red pepper flakes, which helped the dish immensely. Service is attentive and thoughtful. The food, however, is utterly boring in its priority toward fast fooding, and appealing to the blandest of palates.

On a trip to Sioux Falls last week, I was craving pasta. Having been disappointed by the downhill quality I'd experienced the last couple trips to Spezia (my used-to-be-favorite Sioux Falls restaurant), we decided to hit up this chain. Boy, did it hit the spot, and I couldn't believe the quality and quantity for $6.99 each! We had to wait briefly for bread, but that only meant it was hot and fresh. My salad with chianti viniagrette was cold and fresh and I loved the dressing. Two of us got the Skillitini with sausage and the other Angel Hair with Artichokes. All of us were pleased and stuffed! Service was excellent.

Johnny Carino's has a great lunch. I usually have the soup & Salad combo, which is an all you can eat, which also include breadsticks. There are a variety of soups and salads to choose from. Regular menu prices are a little high, but lunch is a great value.

I don't really have all that much to say about Johnny Carino's. Nothing really stood out for me one way or the other. It is pretty much exactly what you would expect from a chain Italian restaurant. The food was fine (definitely a step up from Olive Garden), but nothing to write home about. The price per entree averaged around $10.00. Service was acceptable and the atmosphere maybe a bit above average. While I don't quite get it, Carino's seems to be an extremely popular place, as the parking lot was completely full and we had to wait about a half-hour to be seated. Granted, we got there a little after seven on a Saturday night, but I think it's still indicative of its popularity. I wish there was a way for me to give Carino's a two and a half star rating as I think of a three star rating as a recommendation (which Carino's doesn't really deserve) and a two star rating as a bit too harsh. The best way I can describe my experience was completely average in almost every way, so I guess a three it is. I wouldn't be opposed to going back if others really wanted to, but wouldn't seek it out on my own.

I'll be honest... I never would have stopped in here if it wasn't for the free cocktail coupon I got from the hotel across the street. Carino's is just another typical chain restaurant. It may be a step up from some though, or at least it tries to be. I sat at the bar and got decent service. I ordered my drink and got an appetizer... the wedge lettuce was a bit watery, but still edible and fresh. Not much exciting to mention at this place. But for the location it is a decent option for a meal.

I don't think I've ever been so happy to a see a chain restaurant in my life. I was staying in town for a work-related conference. Forced between attending a mexican-themed mixer at the hotel with name badges or ordering room service, I began frantically googling for restaurants in Sioux Falls. It was looking bleak -- not much near the hotel. Just when I was ready to give up and call room service, I found Johnny Carinos. I originally ate there when I lived in Kentucky (the closest thing we had to Italian at the time). Decent food... and alcohol, which I was in dire need of at the time. I arrived by 1980 Cadilac (another story.. see Sioux Fall Cab review) and was immediately seated. I promptly ordered a glass of pinot grigio. The waitress, bless her heart, brought a glass of something else. When she asked if I was sure it wasn't pinot grigio, I explained that normally it's a white wine, not red. Hey, it's South Dakota. Not exactly wine country. I had the snow crab ravioli -- which was quite good. I'm not sure what made me think ordering seafood in South Dakota was a good idea, but it tasted great. All-in-all I give it 3 1/2 stars. We'll round up to 4 stars because it saved me from having shitty margaritas and wearing a name tag.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
